The Bachelor 2020: Chris Harrison calls Mike Johnson ‘contender’

Who will be the next star for The Bachelor in 2020? ABC may not finalize their decision for the next few weeks — they tend to announce this sort of thing during the Bachelor in Paradise season beforehand. That will likely be what they do here, and there could be a few people on the list until then. Think in terms of Mike Johnson, Tyler Cameron, and Peter Weber. They are atop the pinnacle right now of possible contenders and we know that Mike has a lot of fans out there — and for good reason. He’s got a great smile, a notable story, and he seemed to genuinely care about Hannah Brown. He doesn’t see like he’s on the show just for social media — we don’t fault anyone for having that be a motivation. It’s just nice when there is something more here.

So while show host Chris Harrison doesn’t get final say on these sort of decisions, we like to think that his input does matter. Speaking in a new interview with People Magazine, Harrison made it clear that he is a fan of Max … if that really means something:

“Of course he’s a contender [for Bachelor] … How could he not be a contender with that smile? He’s one of my favorite people we’ve ever had on the show. He’s a love of a man. I don’t know him that well, and I consider him a really good friend.

“He’s just a sweet guy. He gives the best hugs, the best smiles and the best advice. He’s just a really good man and yeah, of course he’s a contender.”

The process that ABC and show produces use in order to make these decisions is a difficult one to gauge. After all, they don’t often choose the most popular contender among fans — think in terms of Arie Luyendyk Jr. and then also Colton Underwood. That tradition may hold this time around. They’re going to go with the person they feel is most “ready” for the role, the most malleable, and also someone with an easy story to tell. That’s what past seasons of the Bachelor show us.
