Is Big Little Lies renewed for season 3, canceled, or neither at HBO?

Is Big Little Lies renewed for season 3, is it canceled, or is this just meant to be the end tonight? We foresee many questions coming out in the wake of what we had in tonight’s finale and through this article, we want to do our best to break some of that down.

Let’s just start with the facts in their purest form: There is no Big Little Lies season 3 renewal at the moment at HBO. To go along with that, there is no clear plan for there to be one, either. What we’ve been hearing, time and time again, is that the plan is for the second season to be it. We’re kind of lucky to be given that in the first place given that having a second season was never the plan.

So why wouldn’t a season 3 happen? It has nothing to do with ratings, so let’s go ahead and get that argument out of the way almost immediately. This season is averaging almost 1.6 million live viewers (up significantly versus season 2), and that number increases exponentially when you factor in HBO NOW/HBO GO streams, repeats, and DVR viewership throughout the week. It’s one of the network’s more successful series and it’s an absolute awards darling thanks to its big-name cast.

On the flip side, it’s the nature of this big-name cast that makes it so much harder to continue to utilize them. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and the remainder of the cast all have other projects and those are going to command the majority of their upcoming schedules. They wanted to do another batch because they enjoyed the experience the first time around, but doing a third would probably mean waiting for the stars to align — and that’s never an easy thing.

Rest assured, we do still think there’s a small chance that a Big Little Lies season 3 will happen eventually — who knows where everyone will be years down the road? For now, though, it feels best to consider tonight’s finale to be the end of the road and we’ll see more of what comes around in a year or two.
