Why is NCIS season 17 keeping as much as they are under wraps when it comes to Cote de Pablo and Ziva? At the moment, it’s a worthy thing to wonder about.
Just think about it in the following terms — production is already underway on the premiere episode and, to go along with that, many cast members are on set. We’ve seen photos and videos of some of them, including Wilmer Valderrama, Emily Wickersham, Brian Dietzen, and Sean Murray. Yet, we’ve seen nothing of Cote, and it seems fair to assume the show is not filming any episodes out of order. Based on what was said around the first table read for the premiere, it was Ziva-centric. (Note that Wilmer only showed half of the table that he was sitting at, meaning that Cote could’ve easily been seated on the other half.)

So why wouldn’t CBS want photos of her out there at the moment? Everyone does already know that she is appearing in the premiere thanks in part to a press release that was issued mere minutes after the finale. Yet, there are mysteries beyond that. It’s not even 100% confirmed that Ziva was standing in front of Gibbs — it could’ve been an illusion (he has been prone to them lately), but we don’t believe that it was. We think it was really Ziva standing there since otherwise, it would be one of the most frustrating reveals ever.
Yet, CBS knows that they have a real ratings winner here in Cote and they probably want to keep things under wraps the next few weeks as to better control their narrative. If they give away too much of her on set now, it makes it harder to build momentum closer to the premiere. If Ziva has been on set so far, they could end up saving any photos/teases for a few weeks, at least. They want to take their time since she’s the primary promotional forcee for the season 17 premiere this September.
Also, producers may not want anything to come out that could be even mistaken as a spoiler. Take, for example, if someone posts an image with themselves and Cote on Instagram. That will lead to speculation that they are filming a scene together, even if that is not the case. Every little thing about Ziva is going to be scrutinized, whether it be here or other publications. The plan may be to make us wait a while longer.
