If you look below, you can see (via executive producer Warren Leight) a first look at the Deadwood and American Gods star in the role of “a charming and high-profile media mogul who takes on Olivia Benson and the SVU squad after being accused of sexual assault.” He is the sort of high-powered foe that always challenges the Special Victims Unit. He is the sort of character who has probably gotten away with all sorts of unspeakable stuff over the years. This is an opportunity to expose the man for the monster he is and showcase exactly what he’s been getting away with throughout his career.

It remains unclear at the moment if McShane’s character is based directly on any major media figures that are out there, but Roger Ailes is the name that comes immediately to mind based on all of the accusations that are out there. This is the sort of case that will require Benson and the rest of the SVU team to go into overdrive in order to make sure justice is served, and it remains to be seen how much help they’re going to have from the DA’s office. We’re sure that there will be a prosecutor; we just don’t have verification as to who it’s going to be just yet. The departure of Philip Winchester may be felt in the premiere, though the show of course will go on and we imagine that there will be some casting news announced before too long.
New episodes of SVU premiere this fall on NBC. The casting of McShane for the premiere is just the tip of the iceberg.
