How will Ink Master season 12 episode 7 be different from some of the others we’ve seen so far this season? For starters, we’re looking at a position where there are no coaches or teams. The theme is about technical application and having to face off against other artists.
The sneak peek that CarterMatt has for you below does a good job of spelling out what you’re going to have a chance to see. The remaining artists (the men and women are currently equal) all draw skulls. Some have an opportunity to pick an opponent, whereas the others get a chance to call their shot — picking the style and subject matter of the tattoo. That’s a way to trip up an artist if you know that they have a particular weakness.
Most of the match-ups are fairly predictable here — the men choose the women to face off against, whereas the women choose the men. Yet, Tito decides to throw in a curve-ball by deciding to square off with Jake. Why do that? It may be because he felt like Jake would pick something that was a little more in his wheelhouse — he says this does force two women to compete against each other, but what does that matter if two guys are doing the same thing? Kind of a weird choice, but we are interested to see how it shakes out.
What we like about this challenge is that you get to see two different interpretations on some of the same things and there are some cool choices in here. Take, for example, Laura deciding to do a new-school full-body color alien holding the Milky Way galaxy. Meanwhile, you’ve also got in here dog tattoos, flaming hearts, wolf heads, and some other cool designs. Because the artists are choosing what they want to do this time, it allows them to show off different areas of skill and cool ideas. Of course you do get more roses in here somewhere — is there a more common tattoo design on Ink Master than a rose? Hard to really think that there is.)
