Lucifer season 5: Could Timothy Omundson return as God Johnson?

Timothy Omundson - Lucifer

We’ve made no secret of the fact that “God Johnson” is one of our favorite Lucifer episodes — much like we’ve also made it no secret that Timothy Omundson is one of our favorite actors on the planet. It was a match made in Heaven (sorry about that, Lucifer) when Tim first appeared on the show years ago; since that time, there have been questions all about it.

We know that the interest is there in Omundson coming back among fans, especially after he returned to film Psych: The Movie 2, his first major movie project since recovering from a stroke back in 2017. Is there an interest behind the scenes? It appears so, based on what show executive producer Joe Henderson told Assignment X in a new interview — provided that Omundson is interested and ready for the gig:

It depends on where he is recovery-wise. It’s one of the things we want to do is reach out and see where he is as we get closer. I think we’ve talked about this a little bit. I’ve never before had an actor come into one episode who just felt like part of the family so quickly. I haven’t talked with him for a couple months, I don’t know where he is in recovery, I don’t know where he is on wanting to be either on screen or in anything right now. But we love him, and he’s just such a joy and talent. That’s one of the top-of-the-list things that we want to talk about when we get into the [writers’] room.

This interview was posted this week, but conducted prior to the start of the writers’ room opening. There may be more of an idea as to what’s happening behind the scenes at this point.

A big part of what made the “God Johnson” episode so fantastic was the idea that Earl Johnson’s belief that he was God could somehow be true — yet, it turned out that Earl was just a man. Was he possessed by God during the episode, or just delusional? That’s a question that is still worthy of some debate; regardless, it’s hard to question the joy in getting Omundson back for another appearance. It was such a fantastic character, plus we’re always going to cheer on the idea of circling back to a couple of great guest stars before Lucifer comes to a close. Unfortunately, season 5 is it’s last.
