She’s Gotta Have It canceled at Netflix; season 3 could happen elsewhere

She's Gotta Have It

Consider She’s Gotta Have It the latest Netflix series to fall victim to a surprise early execution. Today, the news came out that the adaptation of the 1986 movie is ending after two seasons on the air.

In some ways, the move to end the series comes as a surprise given everything that it brought to the table. Yet, at the same time it’s not much of a surprise at all. Think of things in the following terms — She’s Gotta Have It is joining the likes of Santa Clarita Diet, Everything Sucks, Daredevil, and One Day at a Time as shows to get the axe from Netflix this year. We can’t say that we’re shocked about anything that Netflix does at this point; they have so many programs that they no longer have to worry about keeping one around if they don’t think that it’s going to perform for them any longer.

The good news is that it doesn’t appear that the fight for a She’s Gotta Have It season 3 is said and done right now. According to a new report from Deadline, we’re going to see Spike Lee do his best to shop the series elsewhere. With his name recognition, who wouldn’t want to work with him? We also think that there are viewers here, including fans of the original, who would follow. The issue comes in whether or not Netflix has exclusivity following its original run; this made it harder for One Day at a Time to find a new home before landing on Pop TV. (Possible suitors for a She’s Gotta Have It series in our mind could include Starz, BET, or FX.)

In a statement about the cancellation, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos had the following to say in a statement:

“Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we’re thrilled he brought the series She’s Gotta Have It (1986, based on his first feature film) to Netflix … While this is our last season, we’re very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods.”

We’ll see what the future holds now for She’s Gotta Have It — as soon as there are more updates out there, we’ll provide them for you here at the site.
