We’re not sure that we ever saw a Rocko’s Modern Life revival coming. It’s a show that we loved at a very particular point in our childhood, but it’s also one that is a pure celebration of the nineties. It’s weird, off the wall, and looking back, it’s shocking that it ever aired on a kids’ network in Nickelodeon in the first place.
Now, the classic cartoon about a famous wallaby is going to be heading to a different medium for the first time: Netflix. In a post on Twitter, the streaming-service confirmed that they are bringing Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, a new special, on August 9. (For some reason, everytime we hear the words “Static Cling” the song “Details in the Fabric” from Jason Mraz comes to mind.)
In the video below, you can see a little bit of what’s coming on the special, including the title character, some other familiar faces, and Rocko’s home city of O-Town, which also makes us think of something a little bit different now — the nostalgic music group that wants to give it all (or nothing at all).
One of the things that we’re immediately wondering upon hearing the news of this revival is simply this: Will the new Rocko’s Modern Life prove to be more adult? Since most of its audience now is probably at least in their late twenties, it’s something that could be considered. Netflix does have a good range of adult-oriented animated shows led by BoJack Horseman and while it would be a pretty big transition, Rocko’s Modern Life could do it. It would make the show be a little more … modern.
We don’t want to make this news into anything more than what it is right now — a revival of a classic sitcom. Maybe this is something that could be turned into something a little larger and greater down the road but, at least for now, we’ve gotta take things a special at a time and see how popular this is. Netflix will judge it based on the total number of streams and probably compare it to everything else before they start to look ahead.
What do you think about the idea of a Rocko’s Modern Life revival?
