Supergirl season 5: Melissa Benoist shares Kara’s new costume
In a new post on Instagram, series star Melissa Benoist revealed a brand-new costume for Supergirl that represents the most dramatic change that we have seen for the character since the start of the series. Gone is the famous skirt and in its place now are pants. It’s almost a combination of the special suit she wore at points last season and her classic costume, and we imagine that we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of this in National City throughout much of the upcoming season.
While the original costume felt more like a nod to some of the ones in the costume, this one by far wins insofar as practicality goes. After all, we’re talking here about a costume that can probably make filming in the winter far less uncomfortable.
Costume changes have, over the years, been a significant part of the overall Arrowverse. We’ve seen multiple ones on both Arrow and The Flash, while White Canary over on Legends of Tomorrow sports a different look now than she did in the first couple of seasons — though to be fair, the Legends only occasionally wear their supersuits so it’s harder to notice. (The greatness of Legends of Tomorrow is another reminder that as cool as costumes can be, having your heroes in other outfits works just as well.)
Supergirl season 5 will premiere on The CW this October, with much of the early action building towards the epic Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. Supergirl will be a key part of the crossover, though we hope that in the process, there are chances for a few other characters to have some time in the limelight, as well.
