If you were hoping to see a number of familiar faces back for Arrow season 8 (also known as the final season), the news we’ve got now should be music to your ears.
According to a new report from Entertainment Weekly, both Colin Donnell and Josh Segarra are going to be reprising their roles as Tommy Merlyn and also Adrian Chase within the final ten episodes of the series. Yet, don’t expect these to be cameos of the two characters in expected ways; showrunner Beth Schwartz notes that “Adrian Chase comes back in a different way than expected,” while executive producer Marc Guggenheim notes that the Tommy we’re going to be seeing is not the same Tommy we’ve come to know and appreciate on Arrow over the years.

The bulk of Segarra’s run on the CW series dates back to season 5, when Prometheus provided one of the best arcs that we’ve seen throughout the show’s history. He was a powerful, compelling villain brought about because of a personal vendetta and a desire to destroy the Green Arrow as we knew him. The showdown on the island remains one of Arrow’s greatest episodes, as it took lives and brought so many characters all into the same space.
As for Tommy, his appearances have been more sporadic. Donnell was a regular on the first season of the show until Tommy was killed off in the finale. We’ve seen appearances from him here and there since, with Tommy serving as the Earth-X version of Prometheus within the Crisis on Earth-X crossover event. He last appeared in season 7 in a way that was more similar to the original version of the character. Will he be evil this time around? It’s all due to wherever Oliver is and what he’s doing after the Monitor held him to his end of the bargain in the season 7 finale.
Donnell’s schedule is a little more flexible this go-around for Arrow — he departed his other show in Chicago Med at the end of the spring, though he will be returning there to offer closure to his character of Connor Rhodes.
