Speaking in a new interview via TVLine, executive producer Krista Vernoff noted that she and the writers “have painted ourselves into a very real corner” in terms of having DeLuca make the decision that he did. Provided that he and Meredith make it through this crisis, she also notes that Andrew will need to learn more about letting Meredith fight her own battles:
“She already began to [teach him] … in her final [Season 15] speech to him, where she told him, ‘Look, if we’re going to be together, you’re gonna have to develop some instinct for self-preservation, and you’re gonna have to trust me to stand in my own truth.’ That was her teaching him what it is to be with her. And more will be revealed.”
These teaching moments are not negative ones by any means. Instead, we view this more as just Meredith helping to guide Andrew along her path while he works to bring her along his own. The truth is that we don’t know DeLuca anywhere near as well as we do Meredith. There are so many things that we still have to learn ourselves and through some of the episodes coming up, hopefully we will have a chance to learn then. Andrew has his own insecurities, after all, and he is still in a place where he is trying to figure out what sort of doctor he wants to be.
New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy are going to be premiering on ABC this September — here’s to another eventful season with romance, drama, and everything in between.
