According to a report from Deadline, the actress (otherwise known as Izzie from Grey’s Anatomy) is going to be coming on board as a star and executive producer for Netflix’s drama series Firefly Lane. It is based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah, and will be overseen by No Tomorrow alum Maggie Friedman. The premise for the show is simple enough: “Firefly Lane centers on two inseparable best friends and their enduring, complicated bond, spanning four tumultuous decades.”
The moment that we think about a story spanning four decades, the more we also think that this could be Netflix looking at NBC and being like “hey, we can do something like This Is Us too! Just try and stop us.” We’ll see how many different actors are cast to play iterations of the show’s characters. What we know is that Heigl will play Tully, described in the character description as “a force of nature: magnetic, ambitious, reckless, and fiercely loyal. Still bearing the scars of a traumatic childhood, she is dogged by inner loneliness, even as she goes on to fabulous fame and fortune as a journalist and talk show host. Her saving grace is her best friend and soulmate, Kate, with whom she shares an unshakable bond.”
Heigl joined Suits back in season 8, following the departure of original cast members Patrick J. Adams and now-Royal Family member Meghan Markle. Prior to this, she appeared in two short-lived network dramas in Doubt and State of Affairs. In coming on board a Netflix series, Katherine is moving in the direction of where many shows are at the moment — streaming is becoming increasingly popular, but we do still wonder if we’re going to be getting to a tipping point where there is too much content for anyone to ever digest. (In the wake of the big HBO Max news, we’re already starting to wonder if there are too many streaming services coming.)
