grown-ish season 3 spoilers: STAR actress Ryan Destiny on board
Per a report from Deadline, Destiny is going to recur on grown-ish season 3 in the role of Jillian, described as a “transfer student from an HBCU who has come to study filmmaking at Cal U. Smart, worldly, and cultured, Jillian can talk art and music with Luca (Luka Sabbat), politics and activism with Aaron (Trevor Jackson), and also fits right in with Zoey (Yara Shahidi) and her eclectic crew of girls.”
Production on grown-ish season 3 kicked off today, and even though the second season is still airing, obviously Freeform was eager to get work done on the latest batch of episodes now. Consider this them trying to get the jump on all sorts of cool stuff now so that they can premiere the new season by early 2020, at the latest.
As for how Jillian fits in within the larger world of grown-ish, it feels almost like a glove. She possesses qualities that make her ideal for almost any social circle and that should lead to her becoming a key part of the story in record time. Of course, there’s a question to wonder — does she fit in too well? What are some of her vulnerabilities? Sometimes, there’s such a thing as being too perfect where nobody can really relate to you — instead, they just fixate on all of the different things that you bring to the table and wonder how you are capable of all of them. Go ahead and add to this the fact that college is a time when you are still vulnerable; you’re struggling to figure yourself out and because you are (technically) an adult now, there’s more of an expectation that you have to “figure things out for yourself.” There are characters who are struggling and doing so quietly. Maybe all of these positive attributes Jillian possesses are hiding something a little bit darker and deeper underneath the surface. That’s something that we will have to figure out more as this third season actually airs.
While Destiny does have this role to look forward to, it also looks as though her time on STAR is not completely over. Lee Daniels is planning a movie-of-sorts to tie up loose ends.
