Grand Hotel episode 5 preview: Another Sky suspect revealed

Grand Hotel episode 5 next week is going to feature some new storylines. Yet, to go along with that, it’s going to add more fuel to the show’s principal question: What happened to Sky? Five episodes in, there may be a part of you that feels like now is the time for this show to start providing more in the way of real answers. Yet, we’re seeing the writers go the other way. They’re filling the field with more possible suspects, including someone with a notable romantic connection to her. This is the sort of person who you’d immediately raise an eyebrow at. If this person had a tough end to their relationship with Sky, couldn’t you buy into the idea that they would want to make them disappear?

Every single storyline within Grand Hotel episode 5 feels straight out of the primetime soap playbook. Revealing a big secret to the family is akin to the forty-yard pass near the end of the game, while a hidden relationship is a standard run right down the middle of the defensive line. (For those who want to keep this football metaphor going, killing off a character is that final play where you’re tossing laterals around and hoping for some sort of miracle.)

With this show, it’s not so much about how familiar the story elements are, it’s what they do with them instead and some of the lengths the writers are going to go in order to make every element feel special. With its cast, its setting, and its sense of tone and humor, Grand Hotel can easily make its experience feel one-of-a-kind … even if it’s using a number of familiar ingredients first.
