While Colin Donnell is still leaving Chicago Med, consider this news a way to feel a little bit easier about the exit. The actor will return in order to make sure that his story has a proper conclusion.
As first reported by Us Weekly, Donnell will be back for the first episode of the season as a way to cement Connor Rhodes’ exit — think of it as a similar deal to what Rachel DiPillo did with the Chicago Med season 4 premiere. His exit came as a huge shock, given how important he’s been to the series from the start and also the lack of closure for Connor at the end of season 4. The major storyline revolved around the death of his father … and then also the suspicion that Ava may have killed him in order to ensure that he couldn’t get in the way of a relationship between the two.

Given that Norma Kuhling is also leaving the show, it’s fair to assume that the start of the season will address both what happened to her character and then also where things are going from here in regards to Rhodes’ future. Our feeling is that Ava could end up in prison for what she did, while Connor may decide that there are too many painful memories at this point at the hospital. While he and his dad didn’t have a great relationship, there was still a history there. He would’ve never asked for something like this and that could lead to him wanting a fresh start elsewhere. (The similarities between this possible ending and what happened to Dr. Reese are pretty striking.)
You’ll see Chicago Med season 5 premiere on NBC at some point this fall — we would assume that at some point a little bit later this fall, you’re going to hear a more in regards to casting news. Given that the show is losing two prominent cast members, it makes sense for them to venture out into the world and try to find a couple of other faces to jump on board. They will help to fill out the ensemble show, which tonally will probably not change all that much.
