Queen Sugar season 5 renewal hopes: Are we moving in right direction?
At the moment, what we know is this — the ratings for season 4 are down versus season 3. Yet, they’re not down to such a large degree that makes us altogether worried. Let’s put this in perspective. In the 18-49 demographic, season 4 is down less than 20% versus season 3; in total viewers, it’s down less than 10%. These are hopeful signs, especially since they are much smaller decreases than anything that we saw in between season 2 and season 3.
If the series continues to have the ratings it does for the rest of the summer, we’re confident that it will get the season 5 greenlight. More than that, we assume that there are plenty of exciting creative twists and turns coming up — and there should be plenty of room for a season 5 at some point in the future.
The question that you have to wonder here becomes mostly this — when could we see a season 5 renewal announcement happen? Last year, we saw the announcement come in early August — roughly a month or so from where we are right now. That sort of timing feels about right, since that will give producers plenty of time to figure out the story they want to tell next … and also plenty of time for them to film the upcoming episodes and get them ready.
We recognize already that a show like Queen Sugar isn’t going to stick around forever — mostly because no shows stick around forever. Every single one of them out there has an end date! We just want there to be an announcement of a final season long before it lands. That way, we have a reasonable sense of when the story is ending — and that there is time to process the news and get closure.
