Is The Son season 3 renewed, canceled at AMC? What lies ahead
We’ll keep the response to this part of the piece fairly short and sweet: There’s not a whole lot more coming. Tonight’s finale is the series finale — it’s the end of the road and the last chance that we’re going to have to say farewell.
So why is The Son ending? When AMC first announced the season 2 premiere date earlier this year, they did so noting that this was the end. We feel like this was something that was in the works for a while. For starters, this is a show based on source material, and with that does come more of a sense of finality. Given that we’re already seeing some of Young Eli’s story tie together, it makes some sense that we’re nearing the end of it. Also, Deadline noted that Pierce Brosnan had a short-term contract on the show, as many movie stars do who come over to TV. This flexibility allowed him the chance to tell this story and then move forward, if he wanted to.
In the end, The Son ending is mostly a function of everyone telling the story that they wanted to tell, for at least the ratings that AMC got for it. This wasn’t the most popular series on the network — while it did perform well with older viewers, it struggled more in the ad-friendly 18-49 demographic. It also had a difficult timeslot on Saturday nights — the same spot that Hell on Wheels had for the remainder of its run.
Following The Son, will AMC remain committed to Westerns?
That’s the hope. Shows don’t have to run four or five seasons; sometimes, it’s okay to just have them for a few and then call it a day. Things don’t often have to be a little bit more complicated than that. You can have a show for a couple of seasons, see it through, and then move forward to something else. We’d actually like to see them go back to more of the Old West, the period between Young Eli and Older Eli on The Son, and take on some of what we have a chance to see there. Go back a little bit in time and focus more on traditional outlaws — just with a new spin.
Are you sad that The Son is ending, and would you have watched more?
