AMC’s been doing a kind thing as of late in regards to Fear the Walking Dead — allowing us to see the openings of some of these episodes in advance! The same can be said moving into Sunday night’s season 5 episode 4, one that carries with it the title of “Skidmark.” That’s a reference to Daniel Salazar’s cat, one who he apparently uses in part to take down walkers. Who knew that Daniel and a cat would be such a perfect combination?
Judging from the sneak peek below, it seems like Daniel is using the cat in order to draw out zombies that he can then take out himself. Given that Salazar has certain talents when it comes to taking down bad guys, we can’t say that we’re altogether surprised that he’s able to make short work of some of the undead. What’s a little more surprising is just how well-trained his cat seems to be! It actually follows him around and jumps in his newly-discovered car at his own request.

Helping people is the theme of Fear the Walking Dead in many ways and, in his own way, we do think that Salazar is helping. He’s found a way to actually go out into the field and eliminate zombies who could eliminate plenty of other people. It’s a strange life that he’s leading at this point, one with a lot of loneliness and a lot of isolation. Maybe that’s what makes living with Skidmark so appealing — it at least gives him someone to spend some time with, someone who has feelings that are a little bit easier to digest. It also probably makes it that he’s less devastated if something happens to them. Daniel doesn’t often show it, but we think that he carries with him a certain degree of pain over some of what’s happened in his life, losing so many people who he loved.
Will Daniel ever be fully integrated into the rest of the group? Maybe this story will give us a larger sense of that — even if it doesn’t, we’re still going to embrace this story just for the sake of seeing more of Ruben Blades.
