Riverdale season 4 premiere will be Luke Perry tribute; full title

Riverdale season 3 episode 2

The Riverdale season 4 premiere is airing on The CW this fall, and all early indications suggest that this one is going to be tissue-worthy.

In a new post on Twitter, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa first reported that “In Memoriam” will be the title for the first episode, and he also went on to note that this episode is a proper tribute to the late Luke Perry. When the legendary actor died earlier this year, it happened at a point when most of the story for the third season was written. It would’ve been challenging to fit a proper tribute to the actor into that season, so they did so instead in the form of a title card.

Because of this, Aguirre-Sacasa and the rest of the writers clearly determined that Riverdale as a show would be better off to take a little bit more time before allowing themselves to have a proper tribute to the actor. Will this also be a tribute to Fred Andrews? It’s sad to think about, but it’s also hard to know any other way here. The show isn’t going to recast a character played by this iconic an actor, and nor does it make sense to have Fred abandon his son and just take off. The only story that does make sense is that Fred died following the third season and Archie has to figure out a new way in the world.

It goes without saying that losing his father would put Archie in a terrible spot. Think of what he has gone through as of late already, in between his time behind bars and also some of the other deaths in the town. He doesn’t see his mother all that often and there isn’t any indication that this is going to change in the near future. Unless we hear more about Molly Ringwald coming back, we need to just assume that the character will be around as much as she regularly is.

Even if Fred is gone, we feel confident that he will not be forgotten. He played an important role in this show as one of the few, stable parents that was around. Think about a lot of the other adults on this show and how some of them had dark secrets and were up to no good. Fred had a purity about him and in some of his final scenes, it was nice to see him doing some of what he did best — being there for his son during some incredibly hard times.
