Songland review: Able Heart’s ‘Greenlight,’ Jonas Brothers, Rynn, & more

Songland

On tonight’s new episode of Songland, we ventured back into the show’s studio and embraced a number of different songs — this time for the Jonas Brothers! This was a cool episode. For starters, we learned that Nick Jonas is even more of a musical wunderkind than we thought (even though we already knew he was talented), and we also heard some more super-talented songwriters bring their all. Nick, Jonas, and Kevin had a couple of chances to hear the tracks, and as is often the case in these pieces, we’re going to focus on the three that had a lot of airtime during this episode.

Able Heart, “Greenlight” – Love this song. It’s just got a really cool vibe to it, whether it be the sleek vibe and his ability to just draw so much oomph out of the chorus. Able’s not the sort of guy who is used to performing, but he’s done a lot of ghost-work over his career. This is a club jam if there ever was one — it’s probably the track of the three that will get the most airplay on the airplay, if that’s what the Brothers are looking for.

Rynn, “Crowded Places” – This song could legitimately be a hit. It’s one of the best ones we’ve heard all season. The message is so explicitly clear — that feeling of searching for someone in a crowd and trying to understand loneliness even in the most jammed-up of spots. Even the title here was so awesome and recognizable.

Remmi, “Flickering” – Remmi’s song was probably our least favorite of the three, mostly because we didn’t get the same specific point of view right away. The new version of the song was entitled “Do You Think Of Me” and it changed a lot from start to finish in this episode. It did have a nice hook, but it just wasn’t as memorable as the other two songs that made it to the end of the episode.

What song did the Jonas Brothers pick?

We didn’t really have a great sense of that after listening to the three, but we did think that “Crowded Places” and “Greenlight” were both great choices for this band. It really all comes down to what exactly it is that they are looking for in their career right now, something upbeat or something a little bit more vulnerable.

In the end, the brothers chose “Greenlight” as the song that they wanted. That wasn’t a huge shock given that it does sound a lot like the music that they’re doing at the moment. A great choice!
