The Resident season 3: What to know about filming, the writing process

The Resident

We’re in the midst of dark days for The Resident — it’s as quiet as a tumbleweed. Season 2 has been over for weeks, filming hasn’t kicked off, and there’s been nary an update as to what’s coming up next.

Could that be changing within the next few weeks? We do know that the show’s master wordsmiths are back at work and that’s the first step! In a post on Twitter, writer Eric I. Lu confirmed that the writer’s room is now open — meaning that the team’s probably figured out by now who lives and who dies between Kyle and Jessie. The show’s producers said last spring that there were no formal decisions made at the time the finale filmed and despite whatever evidence is out there, we’re inclined to believe them. There wasn’t any real reason to rush figuring out how to devastate Nic Nevin — and make no mistake, she will be devastated. Kyle may be a heel, but he’s still her father and he did do the right thing for the sake of Jessie. Nic just didn’t anticipate the dominoes falling in a way that would lead to his death.

We know there’s other story stuff worth watching out for — think in terms of patients, romances, and surgery scenes that make us squeamish. The cliffhanger’s just going to dominate the headlines — as any good cliffhanger should. If this wasn’t the case, we’d be worried for the shows future since a cliffhanger should have everyone talking all summer and counting down the days until the Fall. Knowing Conrad/Nic are giving their relationship another go alleviates some of the concern we’d otherwise have there.

For more cliffhanger discussion, we have that for you in our most recent video below! When will The Resident season 3 filming begin?

This isn’t the sort of thing networks/studios really throw out there in advance, but more than likely it’ll be in mid-July. That’s when season 2 began, and that enables production to wrap up a lot of episodes before the late September premiere. Of course, we have sympathy for anyone who has to film outdoor scenes in Atlanta in the middle of July — at least this isn’t The Walking Dead and people have to be outdoors all the time!

We’re sure that when the cameras start rolling you’ll get a tease or two on social media all about it. When season 3 premieres, it’ll be coming your way on Tuesday nights as a part of a new lineup — The Resident and Empire. Two shows that really have nothing to do with each other, but at least they have dedicated audiences. We’ll see how that shakes out in the ratings.

While you wait for more…
