Outlander season 5: Sam Heughan filming; Caitriona Balfe talks Claire

Outlander season 4

In this weekend edition of Outlander notes, we’re talking about season 5! That includes the latest filming update via Sam Heughan, and also Caitriona Balfe talking all about Claire.

Let’s kick things off here with Sam, given that the actor recently wrapped up the latest round of night shoots! You can see a little bit more of that in the Twitter post HERE — or at least a humorous interpretation of it.

Judging from what we’ve seen both on Sam’s social media and his schedule, this has been a long week for him — one of the longest weeks of production so far, in fact. Right in the middle of season 5 filming, he, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin all took off to Los Angeles in order to do the show’s latest Emmy panel. Then, they went back to Scotland for night shoots, and also filmed at various points in less-than-ideal weather.

Now, everyone can rest … at least temporarily. There is still so much work to be done! The show’s not even a third of the way through production as of yet.

What does Caitriona want to do next with Claire?

Speaking in a new piece over at The Hollywood Reporter, Balfe talks a little bit about how her character has evolved, and how she really wants to continue to see that moving forward — after all, it’s been a huge part of Claire’s journey to date:

The beauty about being on season five of a show is that you get to evolve. The character gets to evolve. That’s wonderful because it would feel terrible to play the same thing over and over again. I’m interested in, how does time and maturity and getting older, how does that affect how you react to things? I think the Claire of season one was so much more reactionary and hotheaded than the Claire of now, even though that instinct to sort of act and fight — it just manifests itself in slightly different ways, and she’s not quite as hotheaded, I suppose.

Our feeling is that in season 5, we’ll see a more experienced version of Claire in America, someone who can be more of a leader alongside being a life-saver, a mother, and a wife. She’s going to build a real reputation and, for the first time in a while, it’s not just going to be as someone who is running from various authorities with Jamie. Of course, it remains to be seen just how long that is going to last given what we know about the British and some of what they’re doing in regards to Murtagh. If they show their cards, they could find themselves in danger right away.

What do you want to see on Outlander season 5 for Jamie and for Claire? Be sure to share right now in the comments.
