Big Little Lies season 2 episode 1 spoilers: ‘What Have They Done?’

Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies season 2 episode 1 (entitled “What Have They Done”) is finally coming on HBO this Sunday, and while it took the network a good bit of time to release some official details, we’re happy that it’s finally come to this point. We’ve got a little more information within this article all about what’s coming — but consider it the calm before the much larger storm. While Big Little Lies season 2 may not be sticking around for a long time, it doesn’t really need to in order to achieve some of its desired goals. This is a season about unspooling a lot of emotions in the aftermath of Perry’s death, especially when it comes to Mary Louise’s arrival in this world.

For a little more news in terms of what’s coming, we suggest that you check out the official Big Little Lies season 2 episode 1 synopsis below:

Following first-day-of-school events, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) is worried by Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) behavior and, later, is shocked when Abigail (Kathryn Newton) says she doesn’t want to go to college. Mary Louise (Meryl Streep), Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) mother-in-law, offers her unvarnished assessment of Madeline’s character. Jane (Shailene Woodley) learns from her new coworker, Corey (Douglas Smith), that she’s known in town as one of the “Monterey Five.”

Teleplay by David E. Kelley; story by David E. Kelley and Liane Moriarty; directed by Andrea Arnold.

A part of what makes the series’ setting so important is that it allows for opportunities for the “Monterey Five” in order to be a real, legitimate thing. If this show was set in a larger city with a little more going on, you wouldn’t be able to carve out as much in the way of story about various character reputations and struggles. These are women who don’t really have anywhere to hide … especially when it comes to Mary Louise turning up and causing problems.

We obviously know that Perry was not exactly a model citizen — or, shall we say, he was a monster. It doesn’t really matter label-wise, since Mary Louise is still his mother and she’s going to be spending a good part of this season wanting answers and doing just about everything that she can in order to properly ensure that she gets them. Because of this, we’re going to see an incredible struggle in order to keep secrets buried and stop some problems before they start.

Yet, given that this is Big Little Lies and it’s returning for a reason, you gotta think that there’s no real way to slow down some of these problems and keep them from spiraling. If we were one of the newly-minted Monterey Five, we’d be worried that there could be pain coming beyond just reputation.
