Happy!, Deadly Class canceled by Syfy; does either have future?

Happy! season 2

For anyone out there who enjoyed Happy! and Deadly Class on Syfy, you’re not going to be seeing any more of either of them.

Sources confirm that both of these two series have been formally canceled by Syfy, a network that has a tendency to cancel many a shows. Take, for example, Dark Matter, Alphas, The Expanse, and so many others over the years. We can’t say that we’re surprised over either cancellation, just because the ratings for both shows were less than stellar over the course of their most recent seasons. Syfy does need to find a way in which to better fund their shows, whether it be a better in-network streaming platform or a different advertising model. We know that science fiction shows don’t necessarily come with a low budget, but the shelf life for these shows are short. Very short.

So is there actually hope for both of these shows still? Well, at least to a certain extent. According to TVLine, the studios in Sony Pictures TV (Deadly Class) and Universal Television (Happy!) are going to shop the shows elsewhere. The site also notes that Happy! has found a really good audience for itself over on Netflix, and this may actually be the perfect venue for it moving forward.

Just think about things this way — if you thought that Happy! was weird and extreme on Syfy, just imagine what it could do somewhere that has even fewer limitations. Obviously, we should note that nothing is confirmed right now and in some ways, it could still be a longshot given that the ratings were what they were for this past season. Nonetheless, we do remain cautiously hopeful for Happy! in particular to make viewers happy once more. In general, with these sort of shows the only thing that matters is getting just one network or executive on board. Sometimes, you don’t need anything more than that — just someone who ultimately believes in you.

Today has turned out to be, quite oddly, a big day for cancellation news. After all, earlier it was confirmed that Amazon has canceled Sneaky Pete, one of their more high-profile shows, after three seasons on the air. Ironically, that one also hails from Sony Pictures TV.
