STAR season 4 revival being shopped; is there chance after cancellation?
It has been at least a little while since the cancellation of STAR on Fox, but the folks behind the scenes are still not giving up.
In the new post on social media (see below), show creator Lee Daniels made it clear that he is still working to try to find a new home for the musical drama series, which ended with arguably one of the craziest cliffhangers of all time. It is for that reason that we have included STAR in our recent poll of most memorable TV weddings, even if it’s not exactly the happiest ending to a wedding in the world. It’s completely bonkers, and after watching it, how could you not want to see what happens on the other side? There are so many questions still to be answered!
Unfortunately, there is still no clear indication that there will be a new home for it elsewhere. While we know that Daniels and all of the producers at the studio behind the scenes are working, there are a lot of different issues at play here. Take, for example, the fact that STAR is a reasonably expensive show to make because of all the costumes, musical numbers, and the fairly large cast. Even if it is able to find a new home, there would probably need to be some financial changes or rejiggering done behind the scenes in order to make it work. A couple of potential suitors include OWN and BET, and the report from Deadline notes that there is possibly one other suitor out there as well. Finding a new home for a show like this is difficult, but we think a never say never approach is best given that we have seen shows like Lucifer and Designated Survivor ultimately find another outlet even when the going got tough for them.
So how soon would we have a potential decision here? Probably over the next week or so, judging from what Lee Daniels said. That also makes the most sense given cast contracts that eventually, people would have to move on if the show stays in limbo too long. There is a fairly limited window in which a show like STAR can be saved, mostly because eventually, you got to let the cast and crew go on and find some other sources of employment elsewhere.
Even after cast contracts expire, is it still possible that a revival could bring everyone back together months down the road? In theory sure, but it’s a lot more difficult since you have to find a way to re-sign people to new deals and they may be interested in other ideas at that time. Going back to the Designated Survivor example, though, we did see many cast members off to return to that series even after their contracts were no longer secured. Anything is still possible, and we’d just focus on trying to get the show saved before worrying about anything else.
Obviously, this is still a fluid situation, and we will have more news the moment that it comes out.
