Following last night’s finale, it makes sense to throw the question out there into the universe — are we going to see a Ransom season 4 at CBS or Global? Has the series been renewed, or are we destined to see it head off into television’s great beyond?
We’ve said this before and we imagine that we’ll say it many more times if the show continues — it’s harder to gauge the success/failure of Ransom than just about any other show on the air. Why? For starters, it’s airing on Saturday nights and it’s almost impossible to gauge just what expectations are on the night. This is a series that is hardly promoted on CBS and we feel like to some degree, the network has to know that there aren’t going to be all that many people watching. There just aren’t that many opportunities.
Beyond just that, there’s another key component: The fact that Ransom isn’t even really a CBS show in the first place. This is a Canadian drama that Global has a great deal of pride in, and CBS doesn’t have to invest anywhere near the same amount of money into it as they do some of the other shows that they’ve got on the air — think in terms of an NCIS or a Hawaii Five-0. This is a low-cost option for them when it comes to expanding their scripted lineup to Saturday nights — we’re almost surprised in a lot of ways that they don’t try to expand it further and give you even more options, since on a certain level, that does make a good degree of sense.
Alas, at the moment there’s no clear word on a Ransom season 4 renewal — we do remain cautiously optimistic about the future, mostly because the ratings have done something this season that they rarely do for a number of other series — stay fairly even from one year to the next. They are up slightly in adults 18-49 and down slightly in total viewers (at least in terms of the show’s US ratings) from season 2, and that’s a pretty remarkable feat given that most shows tend to drop anywhere from 15-20% these days from one season to the next. This proves that Ransom, despite its difficult timeslot and lack of major CBS promotion, has a loyal following. If it keeps coming on the air, viewers will keep watching it and it could end up being the little engine that could.
There’s no obvious timeline on when Ransom season 4 could premiere or could have renewal news announced, though personally, we’re hoping that something will come out over the next few months. We’d like to see the series premiere at some point in the late winter/early spring, that way it can take advantage of viewership opportunities while the weather is a little bit cooler.
