Outlander season 5 spoilers: Meet Claire’s cat Adso! (photo)
Today, Starz posted the first photo on the show’s official Twitter of Adso alongside star Sam Heughan — and it’s remarkable that they were able to get the cat to stay this long! (We say this as a cat owner to a cat that does absolutely anything/everything that she wants.) Based on the profile of Adso in the books, this is a fairly accurate representation — now, we just have to see how accurate a role he’ll play within the story.
In the Diana Gabaldon series, Adso is a cat Jamie discovers on the road following the gathering, with him becoming useful as a way to keep mice away from Claire’s medical practice. He’s a loyal part of the Fraser’s Ridge family and is named after his mother’s cat. Adso could quickly join Rollo as one of the most popular animals within the Outlander world (the TV show, anyway), and we were admittedly concerned that he would end up being scrubbed out because we know that there are so many things season 5 has to include in a small window of time. Remember, there are only 12 episodes for this upcoming season, down from the 13 we’ve become used to due to the past few seasons.
Why additions like Adso really matter
A lot of it has to do with just injecting a little bit of normalcy amidst the chaos. There is going to be a lot of drama in season 5 with the threat of the Revolutionary War looming. Along the way, though, you don’t want to forget that these are normal people just living within extraordinary circumstances. They may be smart and determined and skilled, but they still cherish family and relish in the little moments. Adso is an opportunity to offer a greater sense of family and community — and also please some book fans in the process. Plus, there are a lot of cat lovers out there who watch Outlander — Caitriona Balfe is a cat lover already! Adso’s going to have his work cut out for him competing with Eddie Balfe to become the most famous cat within the fandom.
Given the timing of this photo release by Starz, expect to meet Adso within the first handful of episodes of season 5, which more than likely is premiering next year.
