Is Last Man Standing new tonight? Season 8 challenges
Alas, last week was in fact the final episode of the series, and of course that’s a bummer given that some sitcoms do have slightly larger, 24-episode orders. Also, it’s sad just because we know that there’s more of this show that we would absolutely want to see — more comedy, more heartfelt stories, and more opportunities to relate Baxter family adventures to events within our own lives. A big part of the appeal for Last Man Standing is the opportunity to actually see yourself in a character or two as they go through various highs and lows.

As you may have already heard, season 8 is not going to premiere until after the NFL season (more than likely January), and the biggest creative challenge for the writers will be simply this: Finding a fun way to show the passage of time. They’ve certainly figured out how to do it (just look at the season 7 premiere for evidence), but they can’t just do similar stuff to what they did then. Missing a Christmas, a Thanksgiving, and a Halloween will be sad since those holidays often do make great episodes — we have a hard time imagining that producers will go ahead and do them at some other random parts of the year. (We suppose that it’s possible the producers do give you a Christmas special and Fox finds a way to program one before December 25, but that’s certainly not confirmed.)
So hopefully, Last Man Standing will find a way to deliver some other holiday-related episodes if they can’t deliver on some of the typical fall ones and, beyond just that, continue to find new challenges for all of these characters. The show hasn’t shied away from touching on hardships when the situation requires them, and they should continue to embrace the ups and downs of life. We also wouldn’t be surprised if there are a couple new characters who arrive in a guest capacity, just to add even more life to the overall tapestry. Plus, over time, there are characters who do tend to flutter in and out of life — people make new friends, and we especially think that this is possible for characters like Mandy and Eve.
Above all individual challenges, though, the biggest requirement for Last Man Standing season 8 should just be this: Provide laughter. If that happens, all sorts of other fantastic stuff will follow.
