Criminal Minds season 15 will air on Wednesdays in midseason

Criminal Minds

While we knew already that Criminal Minds season 15 was going to be airing at some point in midseason, we now have a little more of an idea as to precisely how it could be utilized.

Speaking via Deadline, CBS’ programming head Kelly Kahl noted that “the plan is to play Criminal Minds on Wednesday night where it has aired, creating a mini-season and giving SEAL Team and S.W.A.T. weeks off in the middle of the season to avoid repeats.” So, more than likely, we’re going to see Criminal Minds air from early January until mid-March, which is when SEAL Team and SWAT will then come back on the air. The question that you have to wonder here, in turn, is whether or not the final season will air at 9:00 p.m. Eastern or the hour that follows.

Given that the final Criminal Minds season is only ten episodes, that does give the network a lot of flexibility and we’re getting a sense, perhaps now more than ever, that one of CBS’ goals as a network is to reduce the total number of repeats for some of their shows. While we do think that they’re interested in never taking some shows like NCIS off the air (repeats for this show perform better than originals for others), they’re intrigued at the idea of having constant new programming on a given timeslot from September all the way through May. Giving SEAL Team and SWAT a big midseason hiatus is a good way in which to do that.

We’ve already reported rather extensively about the final season of Criminal Minds, but the primary objective here seems to be to give all of the agents proper closure — albeit in one of the darkest, most twisted seasons that we’ve seen so far. We know that there is a significant Big Bad roaming out there in Everett Lynch, but beyond just that, there is a chance that there will be some other dangerous UnSubs along the way. On a personal level, hopefully, we’ll have a chance to see what’s coming up for Reid and JJ after the surprising confession (or was it a confession?) that happened in the finale. Jane Lynch will also be returning as Reid’s mother, and we’re hoping for a chance to see more of Rossi as a married man.
