Line of Duty season 6 premiere date hopes: When could it return?

Line of Duty finale

Do you want to know when the Line of Duty season 6 premiere date is going to be over at BBC One? Within this CarterMatt article, we’re going to break all of that down and talk about when it could be back, how long of a wait we are facing and what some of the obstacles are that the show might face.

Here’s the good news: At least you don’t have to spend the next several weeks wondering whether or not the series is coming back for more. It is! That glorious news of a season 6 renewal was already confirmed by the network a good while back; we haven’t actually had to worry about its renewal odds for the entirety of the time that the series has been on the air this year, which is not something a network usually offers up. Normally shows get renewed one season at a time and is based off of ratings, but with a show like Line of Duty, they know that the viewers are going to be there no matter what. This show is intense, wonderfully acted and gives us all so much to talk about week in and week out and that keeps the buzz for this show strong.

Now, however, we’ve come to the part of this where we have to deliver some of the bad news — it doesn’t seem as though there is all that much of a hurry to announce this premiere date. The way in which show creator Jed Mercurio’s schedule could be organized is not in the favor of Line of Duty coming back anytime soon. There’s a reasonable chance that he will do another season of Bodyguard before he comes back into the world of AC-12, so our sentiment right now is that we’re going to be waiting until most likely 2021 to get this show back on the air. If we’re incredibly lucky, maybe we’ll get a season in 2020, but we’re certainly not banking on that happening.

The reality of a show like Line of Duty though, is that unlike Bodyguard (which may prove to have a far more limited run if the focus remains solely on just one character), this is the sort of show that could really go on forever. We do think that Line of Duty is the sort of show that could even withstand character exits (not that we want them) because it is really a show about police corruption and some of the various things that can be done in order to make sure that it is halted, dead in its tracks.

Our advice

Be patient. Be really patient. Maybe you’ll hear a tease or two about what season 6 of Line of Duty could look like following the finale tonight, but that’s really all we anticipate coming out. There’s no real need for elevated expectations. Instead, just imagine what sort of craziness Mercurio and his team could throw at us next. While at times season 5 had us lost in a sea of abbreviations, there is no denying that when the going was good this season, few shows captured our attention just as this one did. Fantastic through and through with a special shoutout to the music department who made everything feel wildly intense! Loved it.
