American Idol 17 results: Walker Burroughs, Alyssa Raghu eliminated

American Idol

Entering tonight’s American Idol 17 results show, we definitely had a lot of questions as to what could go down. Who could go home … and could it actually be Alejandro Aranda?

We’ve said for a good while now that he’s got a few weeks of safety built-in on this show just on the basis of who he is and what he’s done in the early parts of the season. However, this is the sort of thing that had an expiration date to it if things didn’t work perfectly in the live shows — and we’d argue that other than his original number, he hasn’t quite been the same Alejandro. What he needs to be able to do is deliver some intimate performances with just his guitar, but the band and the stage is kind of washing him out.

So while there was a part of us that still felt like maybe some of his past successes would carry him through, we were still worried that this was the week that the ax would fall on him … but if it did, would he get the save? That’s another big question worth wondering.

We’ll get to the results in just a moment — before we do, here’s a reminder that we got the latest American Idol video for you at the bottom of this article. The results

The not-so-shocking news to anyone was that Alyssa Raghu was sent home. She’s been in danger so much that this was an easy call, but at least she went home with her head held high and she can feel reasonably good about everything that transpired with her tonight. She wasn’t going to get the same, mostly because there was no reason for the judges to save someone who was going to be eliminated again in the first place.

Then, WALKER was eliminated, and that was one of the bigger surprises that we’ve seen. Walker is one of the more publicized acts through the season, but he may have been penalized tonight due to the First Curse — being the first person to perform on the night is almost always the kiss of death. You gotta be aware of that and bring it EVEN MORE than ever if you want to survive.

After seeing Walker not get the save tonight, that validated further that the judges are clearly holding onto this for a potential favorite — think along the lines of an Alejandro, a Jeremiah, or a Madison if something crazy happens. We’re pretty fine with this, just because we’re pretty fine with keeping some of the stronger contestants around for as long as humanly possible.

The top 6 will return to American Idol next week with more performances — and we’ll be back to discuss them soon!
