Thursday night’s Law & Order: SVU season 20 episode 22 will bring a considerable amount of good content to the table, and that includes a chance to see Snoop Dogg in a role that’s certainly different from what you’re used to seeing from him. The promo below is much of the evidence you need on that.

Sure, on the surface it may be easy to look at him playing a rapper and brush it off, saying that this is largely the same sort of thing he does every day in his life. Yet, it’s far from the same. In life, Snoop is this larger-than-life character, this guy who oozes energy and confidence and has catch-phrases for days and weeks on end. Within the confines of this show, however, the part that you are going to see the actor play is certainly very different. P.T. Banks is a rapper who is caught in the middle of a nasty feud with another artist, but following an assault on a pop star, both parties are going to find themselves at the center of some serious questioning. They’re both going to feel the spotlight and based on what we’re seeing from Benson above, she’s going to be arresting Snoop’s character at some point during the episode.

Does this mean that he is actually the guilty party? We think we know well enough at this point to not just to any conclusions, given that SVU is the sort of show that does have a tendency to make you think one thing and then turn around and surprise you. It’s really hard to even pass judgment on this character without even seeing the episode, but our hope here is to see Snoop get some powerful, dramatic scenes — the sort of stuff that shows off a really different side of him. We know that he can be extremely funny in some of his acting work, but this is a different speed and it requires tapping into something new, something painful. It’s a chance for him to stretch himself more as an actor if this is something that he would love to do a little bit more of down the road.

For fans of SVU, much of the appeal here should be getting one more, ripped-from-the-headlines (per the promo) case before you get around to the two-part finale. That could be a little more based around the individual characters, which shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise given that Titus Welliver is coming back as Rob Miller. We know how he probably feels about both Benson and Dodds; with him out on bail, he’s probably also going to do whatever he can in order to get a little bit of vengeance. Brace yourself for that, but also what’s directly in front of you.
