‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 5: Ron Perlman talks ‘understanding’ Clay

As Clay Morror, Ron Perlman has in many ways found a new role that redefines his career in television. This comes after being a star from “Beauty and the Beast” over two decades beforehand, and also even from a recent string of heroic film credits as the antihero known as Hellboy.

So what is so interesting for Perlman about this new role? Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, one element of this role that he immediately makes clear he appreciates is the fact that it is someone who is so wicked, and yet gives him an opportunity to show off more of himself than he has on television before:

“I didn’t understand Clay right away. He’s the character that’s most identified with me — I’m behind no makeup and this is the closest I’ve ever been to looking like me on-screen. But it’s the furthest I’ve ever been from playing someone who is like me.”

As for what is coming up for Clay this season, that much is in part still a mystery. His role has in itself been a little bit interesting this season, as he has shifted into a new position following his leadership role with SAMCRO, and his relationship with Gemma is certainly different from what it once was. As a matter of fact, it’s possible that he is trying to ruin what Gemma has going on now with her and Nero ruined in just about every was possible. Even if he now needs oxygen to breathe, he is still just about as dangerous as he has always been.

Are you still loving Clay’s character as much as ever this season, even if he is playing a very different role in events?
