New Amsterdam episode 20 preview: Max’s realization in ‘Preventable’

New Amsterdam episode 20 is arriving on NBC next week and the first thing worth pointing out is simply this: There are only three more episodes! The multi-faceted New York institution will be saying goodbye for the summer soon, but until we make it to that point, we’re going to have an opportunity to see a story all about difficult truths. For Max, it’s going to involve once more his cancer battle. With Floyd, it’s going to involve the work he’s been doing as a surgeon. One way or another, this episode will be important — think of it as the best way to learn a few more things about these two men before the finale airs.

04/30/2019 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Tuesday) : Max (Ryan Eggold) is forced to reckon with his diagnosis in a new way as things become more difficult for him. Meanwhile, Reynolds (Jocko Sims) is forced to address what could have gone wrong in a recent surgery. TV-14 L

The title for episode 20 is “Preventable,” which certainly does come with its own fair share of expectation, as well. Whatever transpires medically within this case could have some harsh consequences, and to make matters worse, there could have been another way. There could have been a different solution to solve the problem. Expect this to be an emotional episode, but we also imagine that there are a few more tweaks that you don’t see coming.

With Max, our expectation is that before this season comes to a close, we’ll at least have a better sense of where things are going in terms of A) his diagnosis and B) his recovery. There’s no real reason for the writers to want to stall on this too much. While we think that Max’s cancer battle is always going to be a part of him, there is a good bit of merit that would come from the writers starting to look ahead a little bit and not just focus on things as they’ve been. Instead, they can look in terms of where things are going. Max’s cancer has defined a part of this season, but it doesn’t define his whole life. We’d like to see what this character is like when he doesn’t know that he is potentially knocking on death’s door.

Will there be stories for the rest of the cast? We would imagine so, but there are some things that NBC isn’t saying at the moment, for one reason or another.
