Outlander season 5 filming update: Deep into the night…

Outlander season 4

It’s not often during the super-secret production of Outlander season 5 that we get filming updates from the cast and crew, so we embrace it virtually whenever it’s possible! Today, that includes news on one of the first confirmed night shoots of the season!

In new posts via the Instagram Stories of Sam Heughan and Lauren Lyle, you get some insight that after a long day of shooting, the two wrapped up at sunrise. Night shoots are one of the things that messes with your mind the most — you’re going to bed shortly after your friends and family are waking up and in that way, it likely feels a lot like two ships passing day after day. That’s why we have so much admiration for some of the people who are able to routinely do them. Even if Heughan, Lyle, and others have night shoots that last for days, it’s still probably not going to compare to some of the challenges the Game of Thrones cast had working on the Battle of Winterfell for weeks on end, dealing with the mud and the cold temperatures.

So why would Outlander be doing night shoots so early in its production? There could be some sort of deception story afloat here, and that for us is the easiest conclusion to draw. Just think about things in this sense — what sort of good stuff is happening late at night? This is when people without problems are sleeping. At night is where the problems happen. Maybe this is when something is done with Murtagh in secret as a means to better protect him, or maybe Fraser’s Ridge finds itself under siege by some sort of force … or maybe Jamie finds himself rolling into Wilmington in the middle of the night for a particular purpose.

The thing about Outlander as a series is that there is never any void when it comes to just how some of these characters can get themselves into trouble. There’s always a way for it to happen, and the early night shoots suggest already that you aren’t going to have to wait all that long in order to see it in season 5. Based on some recent comments via Richard Rankin, there will be a small time jump leading into season 5 and as a result of that, we’re likely to be thrown right into the action in some sort of substantial way. These night scenes may be some of the best indication that we get of that.

Of course, keep checking back for some more news regarding Outlander season 5 and its production — there’s obviously going to be a lot to discuss in the months to come!
