New Amsterdam episode 19 preview: Off to a ‘Happy Place’

Next week, New Amsterdam episode 19 will provide you with a story that’s about, in part, desperation — how to save someone who has spent much of their life trying to save others. Meanwhile, trying to save someone who’s already thought that they have recovered. This is an episode entitled “Happy Place,” but the downside here is that it doesn’t quite feel like a lot of characters are going to be experiencing some happy things within this episode. Instead, this feels like a situation where there is going to be a lot of struggle and heartache, and the characters will likely be left trying to find a proper way to piece through some of this rubble — if it is even possible.

When a NYPD officer is hit by a car in the line of duty, the hospital is turn upside down trying to save her. Meanwhile, Kapoor (Anupam Kher) and Iggy (Tyler Labine) work with a patient struggling with a previous surgery. Also starring Ryan Eggold as Max Goodwin, Janet Montgomery as Lauren Bloom, Freema Agyeman as Helen Sharpe and Jocko Sims as Floyd Reynolds.

What is kind of interesting about where we are in the story right now is a lack of major teases about any big, character-specific stories that are coming within the days/weeks ahead. Where are those, and how and when can we expect them? Are we going to have a chance to see the future of Max’s family play out? What about Sharpe’s personal life? There are a lot of different, more-personal developments that we are hoping will come throughout this final run of episodes.

Luckily, there is still time. To be specific, we’ve got four more episodes to come this season and this affords us the opportunity to see a wide array of new stories, stuffed with twists and turns aplenty. We’re going to have a chance to witness how everything turns out … and then also where we are going leading into a season 2. One of the greatest luxuries about New Amsterdam getting that early renewal is that there hasn’t been any concern for some time about the show’s future. They’ve been able to plan ahead, and we certainly hope that this translates to mean that they’ve been able to start putting some of the building blocks down for whatever a finale cliffhanger is going to look like. (Don’t you have to expect that in some shape or form? This is network TV that we’re talking about!)
