New Amsterdam episode 18 preview: Heading ‘Five Miles West’
Perhaps more than anything moving into this next episode, we just imagine that a lot of these characters are just feeling grateful to be out of the blackout. If they can handle that plus the cold temperatures outside, don’t you think that they should be able to handle anything? That at least makes a certain degree of sense.
So next week when “Five Miles West” airs, we’re moving away from the weather as one of the primary storytelling mechanisms and instead, the focus is going to shift a little bit more over to the patients — you know, the people that actually matter the most on a show like this and those who should be in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) takes a major step in her personal life. Also starring Ryan Eggold as Max Goodwin, Janet Montgomery as Lauren Bloom and Tyler Labine as Iggy Fromme. We’ve already seen on this show that they’re willing to go full-tilt and not anything back for the sake of telling a big story. What’s crazier than having Max, still trying to get better after his cancer diagnosis, running around the hospital in the middle of the night? We almost think that what he needs more than anything entering this episode is a chance to calm down … now that he’s going to get all that much of an opportunity.
Emotionally, we also think that Max is going to be struggling to heal from what he went through tonight. For so much of your life as a doctor, you want to go into every single moment of what you’re doing with the thought that you can save everyone and turn everyone’s life around for the better. The problem is simple: That’s an impossibility. Max is a medical director and he is still struggling with the life-or-death implications of that. He may have gotten some lucky brings tonight, but he’s not always going to have that.
