One Day at a Time season 4: Could Netflix keep it from airing elsewhere?

We know that just about every One Day at a Time fan out there wants to see more episodes of the show. Yet, Netflix may not be as inclined — it’s a complicated story, but one we’re ready to dive further into here.

According to a report from Vulture, CBS All Access is extremely interested in picking up the canceled comedy series — and understandably so, given that it would be the biggest comedy property that the streaming service has and it would certainly boost their profile. CBS All Access has been slowly and surely building a streaming winner — they’ve recently started up The Twilight Zone, they have Star Trek: Discovery, and they are the exclusive home for the Big Brother live feeds which we practically live on every summer. They air episodes weekly similar to traditional TV, so that means you wouldn’t be able to binge them all at once.

Herein lies the problem for One Day a Time — technically, Netflix doesn’t have to allow CBS All Access to pick it up. The streaming service has a deal with the show’s studio Sony Pictures TV that it can veto any move to a rival streaming network for two years — with that, Netflix could just give a big ol’ “nope” to the move and leave the comedy gasping for air. It would be a cruel thing to do, but this business is also cruel! It just feels like after everything Netflix said in regards to canceling the show and how difficult it was that they would let someone else throw out a life preserver only to grab it and stick it back in the boat letting the show sink. Even if it may not be the best business decision for them, allowing One Day a Time to have another home is the right human decision. We also think that it would allow them to have a little bit more goodwill among most of the show’s diehard fans since right now they are none too happy with them.

The aforementioned report notes that there are some other possible suitors out there, including the likes of The CW and also Pop TV, which both have connections to CBS all their own. The problem with those two networks is quite simple: Neither may be able to afford the show in its current form, and they would probably need some sort of additional partner to make that happen. Also, with The CW you really have to wonder where the show even fits given that the network doesn’t do half-hour comedies typically during the season — though they could, in theory, think of this as a summer series to pair with Whose Line Is It Anyway? or some of their other shows. We know that diversity and inclusion are key tenets to that network, and this show is all about Latinx representation, relatability, and lots of laughs. There is something for everyone with this show!

We’ll let you know if any more news is announced — but for now, it seems like hoping for a CBS All Access miracle may be the best thing to do.
