With well over 100,000 votes cast within the span of a few short days, let’s first and foremost give a tip of the cap to both Outlander and Last Man Standing. This is the most votes for a TV Madness battle in history, and one that shows that these are two fandoms who don’t know the meaning of the words “give in.” There was also a lot of back-and-forth between the two shows, as Outlander jumped out to an early lead, Last Man Standing rallied back, Outlander took first place again, and then Last Man Standing managed to claw their way back before getting control of the vote over the past 24+ hours. With more than 66,000 votes, the Tim Allen sitcom and its fans have a lot to celebrate here. Last Man Standing is the winner!
Let’s take a moment to put this victory in greater perspective. This was the first year that we’ve even featured this show in TV Madness! It wasn’t eligible to take part in 2018 due to ABC’s cancellation and the year before, it just didn’t make the final cut. This year, it was a #8 seed — we knew that we wanted it to be a part of the bracket after fans worked so hard to save it, but it was virtually untested on the site in terms of having a presence in terms of online polls. Time after time, it embraced all of its challenges — it defeated a #1 seed in Poldark in round 1 before eventually vanquishing such other foes as Manifest, Blue Bloods, Lucifer, and eventually Outlander within the final round.
Last Man Standing is the first #8 seed to take the top prize in the tournament, and for anyone out there looking to see it repeat, it should be eligible again next year! While Fox has yet to renew it for a season 8, that feels almost like a foregone conclusion — now that the Disney – Fox business seems to be done, we expect more renewals to be coming via the network sooner rather than later. (We already know for certain that Outlander will be eligible, as it has already been renewed through season 6.)
As for what’s next in terms of CarterMatt polls, there’s going to be some exciting stuff next month featuring some different shows and characters! Stay tuned for more on that, but for now let’s give one more round of applause to Last Man Standing for a worthy win, and for Outlander for another valiant effort. With 2 former TV Madness titles under its belt, it remains the most-successful show in the history of the tournament.
