This Is Us season 3 episode 17 promo: Beth, Randall’s wedding day
In the video below, you can see how “R & B” is a story full of fast, difficult extremes. You’re going to see these two characters fall in love, get engaged, and even on their wedding day — we got to see this happy celebration from Toby and Kate, but Randall and Beth were long married back at the start of season 1. They’ve already crossed off their milestones so in order to behold them, we have to jump back into them. It’s blissful, it’s happy, and it’s chock full of sunshine and delight for these two characters who had their whole future in their hands.
So why juxtapose that with the two of them in the middle of their largest fight, presumably of their entire relationship? Well, it’s mostly to give you a big, heaping reminder that no relationship is perfect. That’s what makes the current state of things so jarring — you know, the one where Randall is coming off like the king of all jerks. He’s been set up within this window of perfect husband, with Beth the perfect, supportive wife. But they’re now in positions where their futures are veering off in different directions and Randall’s ego is fueling this notion that his work helping to reshape a community is more important than Beth helping people be more active and discover their artistic side. One does not supersede the other; the moment Randall stops being competitive over this, the better the two will become.

While the promo does give you some solid insight on the state of all things R & B, why not get a little bit more from one of the show’s primary architects? Speaking on the subject via Entertainment Weekly, here’s what show executive producer Elizabeth Berger had to say about what makes next week so special:
Next week’s episode is one of our favorite we’ve ever done, and we wanted to make sure that we weren’t just focusing on fraught moments of their relationship or difficult ones; we wanted to really show the whole picture. So you’re going to see some really beautiful moments, some really funny moments, some really difficult moments. And there are just powerhouse performances by Susan, Sterling, Niles [Fitch, who plays teenage Randall], and Rachel [Hilson, who plays teenage Beth], and we can’t wait for everyone to see them.
This is the Randall and Beth story that we all need; hopefully, it will also be the panacea that saves us from some of our darker, more terrifying thoughts about their future. We know that marriages aren’t perfect and not every one of them lasts, but we don’t think it’s so wrong to have some of those idealistic ones to watch on TV! They are the relationships that give so many hope, and serve as a guide even in the midst of all of the imperfect moments in life.
