Arrow season 7 episode 17 preview: Felicity’s tough choice

Emily Bett Rickards

After spending a good chunk of time in the future, next week’s Arrow season 7 episode 17 is jumping back into the present. In doing so, we’re getting a big Felicity – Laurel story, something that we don’t think that we’ve had a chance to see for most of the season. When one of them has a big story, the other one’s more in the background. They haven’t run in the same exact orbit in the past, especially during the whole Black Siren era. (Remember when Felicity punched her in the face? Times have changed.)

Yet, here’s the problem about having a lot of people you care about all in one place — what if one person angers the others? What if you find yourself wedged in the middle of a conflict? Then, you’re the meat in an argument sandwich and you have to find a way to crawl out before you get devoured whole. That’s what Felicity has to figure out and it’s a choice that could define her immediate future.

For a little more insight, check out the Arrow season 7 episode 17 synopsis that CarterMatt has for you below:

LAUREL TEAMS UP WITH OLIVER – Laurel (Katie Cassidy) learns about some damaging information that affects Emiko (Sea Shimooka). Always looking to protect his sister, Oliver (Stephen Amell) invites Laurel to help investigate, which makes Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) happy as her friend is now working with the team. However, when things go awry, Felicity is forced to make a choice between the team and Laurel. Patia Prouty directed the episode written by Sarah Tarkhoff & Elizabeth Kim (#717). Original airdate 3/25/2019.

Let’s play out this choice for a moment, shall we? If Felicity decides to be #TeamLaurel, she forges a deeper bond there, but then maybe at the expense of Oliver and just about every other member of the team. Good in one way, and very bad in others. However, if Felicity is #TeamEveryoneElse, she causes a rift with Laurel, and do you really want to risk Laurel’s dark side coming back out to play? In addition to being stuck in the middle of an argument sandwich (can you tell we missed lunch with all these food metaphors?), Felicity is also basically at a casino where the dealers rig the operation. Even if she wins a little money, she’ll lose it all on the next hand. There’s nothing she can do to win unless she runs out of the casino-full stop. Maybe if she steps away from the decision, she can make things better before they get worse. Worst case scenario? The casino burns to the ground, i.e. the team falls apart again and we’ve already been in that situation before.

This episode matters. Every episode matters. We’re at that point now where you gotta hang on every word given that we’re less than 20 episodes left for the show. 20 episodes, seriously. We’ve come to terms with the whole final-season part; we’re struggling a little bit more with the 10-episode order.
