NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 17 review: Did Hetty return for the wedding?

Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 17 was poised to ask many important questions. Take, for example, whether or not Deeks and Kensi are actually going to get married, what was in the long-mysterious box, and also whether or not we got Linda Hunt back!

Of course, there were some other issues including some bad people as well as things that could’ve derailed the wedding. For now, though, let’s focus on answering the key questions!

What’s in the box? – First, Deeks had to track it down within the armory — after that, we learned that the box was filled with all sorts of silly stuff … and then also a key to a storage locker. Within that storage locker was a ring — her father’s ring. Kensi explained in a letter that it was one of the most important things in her life, a reminder of the love that he gave her.

The moment we saw Kensi’s letter and understood what this ring meant to her, all of the years of waiting for this proved to be worthwhile. It was touching, it was emotional and it was everything that we wanted — just the look on Eric Christian Olsen’s face as he read the letter was all sorts of powerful. This box mystery had so much hype wrapped around it that we were worried that it wouldn’t live up to it, but it really did – just a really beautiful moment.

Did Deeks and Kensi get married? – On the road to getting there, we had a number of lovely little moments! Take, for starters, getting to see some Kensi’s friends! Also, we saw a nice moment involving Kensi and Roberta at the bar, and then also Deeks freaking out after getting the ring, thinking that he would never live up to her expectations.

The case of the week tonight came about via Anatoli Kirkin, who arrived at the start of the episode and then, seemingly, got himself kidnapped. While Deeks was trying to prepare for the wedding, Sam and Callen then found themselves tasked with getting to the bottom of it. We knew that eventually the team would figure out what to do here, so the case wasn’t admittedly a major cause for concern here for most of the hour. Instead, we were relishing in the little moments — namely, getting to see Roberta hit on Sam much to Deeks’ extreme discomfort.

Eventually, Anatoli’s story bled over into Deeks’ wedding, with him trying to hide out from the bad guys who were out to capture him.

Did Hetty return? – The status of Linda Hunt has long been a simmering question — and one we wanted to hold out hope for! She’s beloved, and she’s part of the family. We hoped that there would be a chance to see her, but throughout the past few weeks, we’ve tried to slowly temper our expectations, knowing that Linda was recovering from a car accident and her return couldn’t be rushed.

Yet, here’s where things got fun — Hetty not only returned, but did so by driving into the site of the wedding and taking out the bad guy herself who was ready to take Kirkin out.

The wedding itself

This was beautiful, and a nice testament to everything that we wanted to see from these characters. Hetty was the officiant (did someone give up the gig at the last minute?) and the setting was perfect amidst the ocean and the sunset.

The wedding scene itself was pretty short, but extraordinarily beautiful. Deeks called it his “favorite moment” while Kensi promised him her heart. You had the vows, the kiss, the onlookers, and Henrietta Lange. It was everything that we could’ve hoped for. Hetty wouldn’t explain where she’s been for the past little while, but she claims that there will be a time when she discusses it further and we can’t wait to hear it.

CarterMatt Verdict

Sometimes, TV weddings go a little too far in trying to make the lead-up turn into a calamity. There was some of that tonight, but it didn’t overshadow the event and there are moments in here we’re going to remember for a while — take the contents of the box, Nell and Eric flossing at the reception, and meeting so many of Kensi’s friends.
