Madam Secretary season 5 episode 17 preview: A measles outbreak

Common Defense

Madam Secretary season 5 episode 17 will air on CBS next week, and we’re going to give you a bit of a warning in advance: This one is going to be emotional. A measles outbreak is spreading throughout DC, and one of the people who could be facing some very real health issues due to this is going to be Daisy’s daughter.

To all the parents out there, we know that few feelings are as scary as seeing your child sick and not being able to do anything about it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a common cold or something worse; it’s so personal and whatever medical know-how you have can go out the window. It’s all about trying to help the person you love get through something difficult. We haven’t had any personal storylines for Daisy in a little while and this could be it — yet, it’s one thing to have a personal story revolving around your job, as opposed to one about the medical condition of your daughter.

For some more news when it comes to Madam Secretary season 5 episode 17, check out the official synopsis that CarterMatt has for you below:

The Common Defense” – While Elizabeth is away on a retreat thinking about her presidential campaign, her staff tries to secure an international agreement to protect citizens who have been displaced due to global warming. Also, the staff works to contain a measles outbreak that threatens the life of Daisy’s daughter, Joanna, on MADAM SECRETARY, Sunday, March 24 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

So beyond the Daisy storyline, isn’t it nice that we’re going to be seeing something big when it comes to Elizabeth’s campaign? Global warming is an issue that every candidate needs to be thinking about in the real world; given that Madam Secretary is meant to be a reflection of the world we’re living in, it only makes sense that the show would shine a spotlight on it in a compelling way. One where there are possible solutions to go along with these questions.

If you’re thinking about protecting displaced citizens, there’s one place that automatically comes to mind — Tangier. It’s an island within the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia, one where its residents have a unique accent due in part from them being isolated (within reason) from the rest of the United States. There’s been talk for some time of this island becoming a major climate casualty; while we can’t say if it will be included in this episode, we’d love to see it included because we are a geography geek and someone who likes to see small examples of much larger issues presented on television.

Could Elizabeth actually announce her intentions to run for President in a grander way soon on the show? You gotta hope so! She’s been thinking about it for some time and if you want this show to coincide somewhat with what’s going on in the real world, it only makes sense for it to be soon. (Joe Biden is really one of the only major potential candidates who has yet to announce anything officially in real life but there are certainly a number of contenders already in the ring.)
