Is Shameless new tonight on Showtime? A look towards season 10

Shameless season 8

Is Shameless new tonight on Showtime? Within this article, we’re going to be offering up an answer to that subject … while also talking a little bit more about season 10, otherwise known as the long-term future of Shameless as a franchise.

Unfortunately, the fact that we’re talking about season 10 already probably does serve as a strong indicator that the show is done for the time being — if you didn’t already know that. Last week’s episode (which featured Fiona making her big departure) was the final installment of season 9. The Gallaghers will move on, and we imagine that it’s going to be every bit as crazy and dysfunctional as it’s ever been. You’re going to see a whole lot more of Ian, given that Cameron Monaghan is now a series regular again; we feel mostly confident that rather than try to heavily promote another performer or two to series regular, we’re going to see the writers mostly focus on bringing Ian back into the fold.

When Shameless returns (most likely this fall), giving Ian a substantial story (whether it be inside of prison or out) has to be near the top of the priority list. Alongside that, we are curious if there’s anything more that can be done with Kelly and Carl or if Tami is going to decide what she wants her future to be with her baby.

Then, there’s Frank — and oh boy, there is Frank. This is a guy who’s presumably going to be spending the better part of his hiatus getting sponge baths and then also complaining to any family member in earshot about it. Frank’s a curmudgeon, an opportunist, and above all else a pretty terrible father. With Fiona (long the surrogate parent for many Gallaghers) gone, the divide between him and the kids is going to be all the more apparent.

There is an elephant in the room now in regards to Shameless, one that certainly has not been there in past seasons — and it has nothing to do with Emmy Rossum or her exit. Instead, it revolves a little around William H. Macy and his status now moving forward. It should be noted that all signs indicate that Macy will be back as Frank for the upcoming tenth season; the only thing that clouds his status is the college tuition scandal that has engulfed his wife Felicity Huffman and led to the firing of Lori Loughlin from her own TV show in Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart. We should point out that Macy has not been formally charged with a crime, and so long as that stays the case, the only reason we could see the story of Shameless changing is if he decides that he doesn’t want to come back. For now, you have to assume that he will return and the Gallagher madness will detach itself from whatever transpires in the real world.
