Outlander season 4: Your favorite Caitriona Balfe performance is…

Outlander

At this point last week, we posted an all-important question about Claire Fraser in our Outlander perspectives series — what was the strongest overall performance for her from season 4? What one hour stood out more than anything else?

When you think about all of the different performances that Caitriona gave throughout the fourth season, you will sense pretty easily that there is an abundance of options across the board. Think in terms of her heartbreaking performance at the end of “America the Beautiful,” her getting to reunite with Sophie Skelton in “The Birds & The Bees,” or seeing the aftermath of the Jamie – Roger situation within “The Deep Heart’s Core.” All of these episodes leave a profound impact and are probably going to stick with us for a rather long time.

If you haven’t seen our recent Outlander video, be sure to look below for more thoughts regarding the future of Jamie Fraser at the bottom of this article! Yet, in the end, slightly more than 40% of CarterMatt voters agree that “Blood of My Blood” is the definitive Caitriona Balfe performance for season 4 and it’s easy to see why. This was the episode that brought you the most important moments that we have ever seen between Claire Fraser and Lord John Grey, as the two had an important heart-to-heart in the midst of his illness. That is also where the two developed an important perspective that they did not have previously. Claire helped Lord John to understand that the journey that she’s been on was not an altogether easy one, and that true love for her was not something that came about via a fast-pass. It took time, and it took a great bit of suffering for her to truly find herself and the love she wanted. Claire was vulnerable, but also understandable of Lord John’s pain. David Berry proved to be the perfect scene partner for her, giving and then also commanding in his own presence. He knew how to carry certain scenes through in just the right way.

Were there other scenes within “Blood of My Blood” that did not contain Claire? Absolutely, but this was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the moment we’re going to remember the most. It’s what sticks with us and reverberates through most of our soul. It’s the scene that we could go back and watch on multiple occasions, and it demonstrates exactly the evolution of Claire as a character. While she was always a caring person — her job dictates that — she developed a sense of emotional empathy through her journey that few other characters have. She can be that shoulder for someone, a leader, and someone who is proactive and eager to take on the road alone. It’s beyond of Balfe’s layered performance that all of this remain believable.

Now, we just have to wait and see precisely what Caitriona is going to bring to the table during season 5…
