Last Man Standing season 7 episode 17 preview: The poker game

Last Man Standing

Who doesn’t love a good game of poker? Clearly, the writers of Last Man Standing enjoy it enough to frame an entire episode of television around it.

We don’t want to beat around the bush here too much in the intro — let’s just get to sharing the synopsis and then, we’ll have more insight on the other side:

Mike begrudgingly invites Ryan to his weekly poker game, but immediately regrets it when Ryan gets the guys to open up about their feelings in the all-new “Cards on the Table” episode of LAST MAN STANDING airing Friday, March 8 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (LMS-717) (TV-PG D, L)

We think that there’s something good writers love about doing poker episodes, and it comes from the challenge it provides. You don’t always have some sort of external conflict driving the scene; you have to make the conversation compelling in its own right, and that is not always the easiest thing in the world to do sometimes. With this show, it’s a little bit easier just because you’ve got naturally funny people and personalities that are so easily going to clash with each other. Mike does care about Ryan, even if he doesn’t express it much publicly; the two are so different, and the trouble he’s going to run into here is that it’s hard to bash the guy in front of some of his friends. If he starts to come down on him, that in turn could cause problems for the rest of his family.

A part of the fun of Last Man Standing is mostly getting to see so many different ways conflicts can be created and resolved, and that is what much of this episode could boil itself down to. Mike Baxter is going to find himself in a less-than-fortunate situation and as this episode progresses, he will need to find some sort of adequate way in which to emerge from the rubble. He doesn’t want to anger his friends, but he also doesn’t want to anger Ryan.

Fox has done a rather great job as of late giving us a straight run of new episodes — we know that we’re getting new ones until at least the 22nd of March. Consider that a reminder that this is a show that isn’t afraid of competing against one of the most beastly of opponents out there in the NCAA Tournament.
