How Call the Midwife season 8 episode 7 will touch on vulnerability

Call the Midwife season 8

It’s okay sometimes to not be okay.

This is a lesson that, collectively, is not always the easiest to learn. We live within a world of standards, of expectations, and of not really getting many opportunities to show your true self. The world can beat you down and swallow you whole; it presents you with challenges that feel almost insurmountable to conquer.

The joy of Call the Midwife is that, within the deepest heart of hearts, this is a series that takes a real, serious look at obstacles and how to overcome them. It is bold, unflinching, and unafraid. It may also be teaching some of these lessons to Sister Frances on Sunday night.

We are still getting to know Frances. She’s one of the newcomers on season 8 and carries with her a lot of struggle. It’s hard being the new kid on the block — it’s hard recognizing that you don’t have the confidence of those around you. These are some of the personal struggles that she will face on the upcoming episode airing this weekend on BBC One, and we’re hoping that they pack in a story that feels emotional, relatable, and everything in between. It should be considered a reflection of society both then and also now.

Do we hope that this episode teaches something? Certainly, but only framed through the standard lens of the show. Call the Midwife is considered by many comfort viewing. It is a way to disconnect from the world, ironically with stories that do connect to your world. We think that viewers will find comfort in some of what Frances goes through, while of course capturing the latest adventures of Trixie, Lucille, and many others within Poplar.

One thing to be sad about

Luckily, this time around it has nothing to do with the story. Instead, it pertains to the fact that there are only two episodes left on Call the Midwife season 8 and that means that we have to prepare for some sort of closure. There is, for absolute certain, a season 9 down the line … but it’s not entirely clear what that story will pertain or who will even be a part of it. At this point within the show’s run, it would be almost silly to think that every single person will be back.

If they aren’t, or if something happens to a character or two, we will just take a note from what we said at the start of this article. It’s okay sometimes to not be okay.
