Even though American Idol 17 doesn’t premiere on ABC until next month, you don’t have to wait any longer for the lineup of duet performers!
In the video below, the network reveals that Jason Mraz, Julia Michaels, Brett Young, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Cynthia Erivo, Lukas Graham, Ben Harper, Elle King, Chris Isaak, lovelytheband, and Shaggy are going to join the top 24 once we make it to that part of the show for performances. The duet round is something that’s fairly new to the competition, though this also isn’t the first year that they’ve done it.
For the contestants, this is basically a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform with someone who already has a career in the industry. You can take advantage of the opportunity to get a little bit of advice, or at least figure out the sort of performance quality it takes to be a star. All of these people have had some success in various stages of the entertainment industry — we know that for Benatar in general, we’re talking a little bit about a living legend.
The biggest thing that American Idol 17 probably needs at the moment is buzz … mostly because there really isn’t all that much out there for it. Nobody’s really talking all that much about the series or what to expect just yet, and with the show having the same judging panel this year as they did in season 16, we may be building up for a season that’s more about substance over hype. It needs some ways to keep viewers interactive, but more than that, it just needs some more memorable talent and pop-culture viability. It needs some winners that find a way to stick in the spotlight for a long window of time. Is Phillip Phillips the last notable American Idol winner? It feels that way right now, even if we do recognize that there are a lot of other super-talented people who have come and go on the series.
So while this lineup of performers is notable (especially Mraz, who we’ve been a huge fan of for a long time now), what matters the most entering the new season are the people who are singing with them. We’ll get a chance to size them up in the auditions, and we’ll see what happens soon after that.
