Krysten Ritter, Jon Bernthal react to Jessica Jones, The Punisher cancellations

Jessica Jones

The Marvel TV world was rocked earlier today by a couple of cancellations — after all, neither The Punisher nor Jessica Jones will be continuing for additional seasons. In one way, it’s fair to say that this was expected given that neither show really had the vote of confidence and Netflix seems to be moving away from their relationship with Disney. Yet, at the same time it is rather sad to be saying goodbye to a couple of shows that were a huge part of the Marvel universe. They also represent something greater in that Netflix no longer is working on any series featuring Marvel characters in a prominent role.

So what do Krysten Ritter and Jon Bernthal have to say about these two shows coming to a close? You can see their reactions in some posts on Instagram — there is a sense of sadness with them, but also at the same time, gratitude that they got to tell these stories in the first place. Jessica Jones season 3 is still going to premiere on the service — it’s already been written out and the table read happened earlier this month. The question that remains there is just when it will air. We imagine that due to licensing, all of the Marvel – Netflix series are also going to stick around on the service for at least a little while still.

Is there a chance that some of these characters could end up elsewhere? That seems to be at least reasonably possible, based on what Marvel’s TV head Jeph Loeb had to say after news of the cancellation first came out:

On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful to our audience.

Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.

As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, “The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.”

To be continued…!
