Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks border wall, IKEA, New Zealand

John Oliver

The Last Week Tonight with John Oliver premiere arrived on Sunday, and there was a LOT for the host to talk about. The show’s been off the air for a number of months and because of that, there were several things that were left out of the discussion.

Yet, Oliver did spend a little bit of time discussing what’s been at the center of headlines for several weeks now: President Trump’s attempts at building a border wall, whether it be the government shutdown or the way in which he announced his national emergency plans — namely, how he claimed that he didn’t have to do it but wanted things to be done quickly.

Then, there was a talk about IKEA. To be specific, Oliver had a long conversation all about New Zealand being forgotten on their map. It’s the sort of thing that apparently happens quite often, and tonight Oliver released on his website a version of New Zealand that people can use to attach to any map of their choosing where it is forgotten.

For those who remember, Oliver has talked about New Zealand on occasion in the past. The host has talked about the country’s flag in the past, and the country’s Prime Minister at one point spoke out against him. Clearly, he’s not a fan of some of the comedian’s various antics.

So what we did we think about the opening segment comedically? More than anything, it was a great reminder of how much we’ve come to miss the series over the past few months. This is an uproariously funny show and this was an uproariously funny segment. Oliver’s perspective on Trump is effective because he is brutally honest and somehow silly at the same time. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, but also still gives you a reason to laugh.

Sometimes, the world is just so weird and crazy that you have to laugh at it. This was the primary message of the opening, and also the show itself. By and large, we do think it delivered … but for those of you who wanted more wall discussion, we imagine that this is going to be coming at some point within the reasonably-near future.
